In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energy of autumn is governed by the Metal element

The Energy of Autumn: Part One

What Do We Know About the Energy of Autumn?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each of the Five Elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – corresponds to seasons, organ systems, emotions and sensory experiences. The energy of autumn is governed by the Metal element, which embodies clarity, refinement, structure and release. As we transition from the summer season, it’s important to take a closer look at what we can expect from, and how we can prepare for, the upcoming autumn season.

Metal, the Lungs, and Letting Go

The lung and large intestine meridians are the organs of Metal. Together, they teach us the rhythm of life, taking in what serves us and letting go of what does not. The lungs draw in qi (vital energy) through breath, whilst the large intestine releases what the body no longer needs.

When balanced, we feel clear, strong and resilient – physically nourished and emotionally steady. When imbalanced, we may experience coughs, shortness of breath, sluggish digestion, constipation or dry skin. We can also present an inability to release grief, clutter, or old habits.

The emotion of Metal is grief, and autumn often brings a quiet, reflective quality. Just as the trees shed their leaves, we are invited to release and prepare for winter’s stillness. Supporting the lungs through breathwork, posture and seasonal foods helps build both immunity and emotional resilience, aligning with the energy of autumn.

Evoking the Metal Element Through Food

Seasonal eating is one of the most natural ways to stay in rhythm with the elements. Foods that ripen in autumn – pumpkins, apples, root vegetables – ground and fortify us, providing fibre, vitamins and antioxidants as the weather cools.

In TCM, the pungent flavour found in foods such as onion, garlic, mustard greens and ginger, helps support the lungs. This works by dispersing stagnant qi and strengthening immunity. Eating local, seasonal produce also ensures that food carries its peak vitality, fresher and more aligned with nature’s cycle.
