What is an Acupressure Mat?
Designed to gently apply pressure to specific points around the body (acupoints), an acupressure mat can be extremely beneficial for your physical and mental wellbeing.
Inspired by traditional acupressure, the mat is covered in tiny spikes that press into your skin when placed beneath you. You can choose from a semi-cylindrical cushion to treat your neck, or a larger, flat-surface option for your back, depending on what you think will work best for you.
What’s the Difference Between Acupressure and Acupuncture?
Both acupressure and acupuncture are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) forms of therapy. Each type of treatment focuses on the same pressure points, but they use a different approach to target them.
Acupuncture carefully places needles into these points, while acupressure applies pressure to the area non-invasively. Each type of treatment is beneficial, but acupressure is considered to be more accessible, as it’s easy to perform by yourself!

What Does an Acupressure Mat Do?
The pressure points on the mat help to stimulate blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tight muscles. This triggers your body to release endorphins and oxytocin, both of which are your natural, feel-good hormones.
What are the Benefits of Using an Acupressure Mat?
The pin cushion acupressure mat is helpful in releasing muscle tension and stiffness in the back, neck and shoulders.
It stimulates circulation for faster recovery and healing, boosts energy, improves mental clarity, supports general relaxation and aids in stress relief. Its ability to encourage the nervous system into a calmer state means it can also improve sleep quality and overall wellbeing!
The Release of Endorphins and Oxytocin
A fantastic benefit of using the acupressure mat is the triggering of ”happy” hormones.
The release of oxytocin, also known as the “love drug” or “love hormone,” can do wonders. It can reduce stress and anxiety, promote feelings of relaxation and trust, and contribute to overall psychological stability.
Endorphins have very similar effects on our bodies, but are also the brain’s form of natural pain relief.
Now, there are many other ways to release these feel-good hormones, including exercise, meditation, creating or listening to music and social bonding. However, using an acupressure mat is a surefire way to trigger them, all while allowing yourself time to unwind and relax.

How to Use an Acupressure Mat
The acupressure mat is simple and easy to use:
- Find a flat surface where you can lay comfortably. Place the mat down.
- After removing any clothing from the relevant body area, (typically the neck, shoulders and back), slowly lay yourself down onto the mat.
- Make any micro-adjustments to align your body with the spikes, until it feels balanced and comfortable for you.
- Time to relax! Breathe deeply and allow the spikes to gently push into your pressure points.
Tips for Using an Acupressure Mat
● You should lay on the mat for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
● If you’re new to acupressure, it is recommended to start with shorter sessions, (approx. 10 minutes can be a good place to start), gradually increasing your time on the mat every subsequent time. Extend the duration for as long as you feel is comfortable and right for your body.
● The prickly sensation you may feel is more than normal – give your body time to give into the sensation, as the endorphins and oxytocin begin to release.
● If you get cold easily, consider covering yourself with a light blanket or something similar while you relax.
● You can use your acupressure mat wherever you want – which is a great benefit! – but, we recommend using it in a place where you feel as calm and at ease as possible.

Testimonials
The acupressure mat is a popular product for many reasons – but what do our clients say about it?
“I was recommended the acupressure mat for stress relief, because I hold a lot of tension in my body when I get stressed, causing physical tightness. Using the mat in the evening, or even during the day when I feel overwhelmed at work, really helps me to relax and reduces the tension in my body. Such a simple thing has made a real difference. Thanks Angelika!” – Sophia, a Touch Tuina regular
