Tuina Massage explained…
Tuina massage (or Tui Na, pronounced twee-nah) originated in China and dates back to around 300 BC, being the oldest known form of massage.
It is one of the four main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the other three branches being acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gong) which uses exercise to optimise energy within the body, mind and spirit.
What Does Tuina Mean?
Tuina means ‘pinch and pull’ and generally follows the body’s acupuncture points, targeting specific channels, and looks carefully at the underlying causes of pain and illness, as well as symptoms.
What is Tuina Massage Exactly?
Tuina principles focus on deep tissue and therefore can sometimes be a little painful, especially at first experience. However, it can be extremely relaxing and effective in relieving stress, anxiety, and ultimately aiding sleep.
Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques, Tuina massage can be used as a maintenance tool. By evoking movement of blood and energy in the body, plus keeping the muscles supple, this means it can help prevent problems before they arise.

What Does Tuina Massage Include?
The treatment involves varied oscillation and pressure methods that can be altered in speed and depth depending on an individual’s requirements. It includes the massaging of muscles and tendons, body realignment techniques, and passive joint movements to enhance function and mobility in both muscles and joints.
Back to the Roots
As well as addressing immediate issues, Tuina identifies the root causes in the body, mind and spirit, which a practitioner will focus on. It’s not about just fixing the problem, but doing the work to find the root cause to make sure it’s being properly dealt with.
Tuina is commonly used in conjunction with Chinese herbs and remedies to help aid an individual’s complaints. This helps in promoting total health across the board for an individual, and providing the tools it needs to naturally heal itself.

What Else Does Tuina Include?
Tuina also includes the use of acupuncture, head massage, heat cabinet treatment, stretching of the body, cupping therapy, and aforementioned traditional herbs.
So, although the Tuina will primarily involve massage and manipulation, these additional methods (and more) may be incorporated to maximise its benefits.
Practitioners will also often provide tailored stretches and exercises for clients to try at home, in order to promote healing between treatments.

What Can a Tuina Massage Treat?
Tuina massage can treat an array of bodily complaints. In a nutshell, it can target neck and back pain, tennis elbow, sciatica, carpal tunnel, headaches, migraines, osteoporosis, arthritis, respiratory and digestive conditions.
One of the main functions of this ancient massage technique is to boost blood circulation and flow. Tuina is very effective, therefore, in producing and maintaining improved feelings of general health and well-being.
